Hazard Guidance: Heavy and Awkward Objects
Introduction
This guidance is intended to support safe handling of heavy or awkward objects within Art S’Cool.
Examples include delivery boxes, bags of clay, portfolios, equipment, and other materials used during sessions. Many people experience back injuries at some point, but these can often be prevented by following safe lifting practices.
1. Avoid Lifting Where Possible
Whenever possible, lifting should be avoided or reduced by:
-
Using appropriate equipment such as trolleys.
-
Storing heavy items at waist height (avoiding high or low storage).
-
Splitting loads into smaller, manageable sections.
-
Arranging for deliveries to be placed directly in storage areas.
2. Safe Lifting and Carrying
When lifting cannot be avoided:
-
Allow enough time and avoid rushing.
-
Plan the task before lifting.
-
Clear any obstacles from the area.
-
Test the weight before lifting, or confirm it where possible.
-
Begin with a stable posture.
-
Bend at the knees, not the back.
-
Avoid twisting while lifting or carrying.
-
Keep your head up and maintain good balance.
-
Keep feet apart to create a strong base.
-
Hold the load close to your body.
-
If you need to adjust position, put the load down and begin again.
-
Wear appropriate clothing and footwear (e.g. protective shoes).
-
Ensure the task has been appropriately risk assessed.
3. Assess the Task (TILE Principle)
Before lifting, consider the following factors:
Task
-
Does the task involve twisting, bending, or over-reaching?
-
Will it take a long time or require movement over distance?
-
Is the task repetitive or rushed?
Individual
-
Are you trained or familiar with manual handling?
-
Are you in suitable physical condition to lift?
-
Could this task pose a risk to someone with health considerations, disability, or pregnancy?
Load
-
Is the object heavy, uneven, or difficult to carry?
-
Does it have an awkward shape or lack suitable grip?
-
Is it hazardous (hot, sharp, or corrosive)?
-
Is it fragile or valuable, requiring additional care?
Environment
-
Is lighting sufficient to carry out the task safely?
-
Is the floor in good condition, free from trip hazards?
-
Are there steps, slopes, or confined spaces?
-
If outside, could weather conditions affect safety?
-
Does the task require additional equipment or training?
4. Safe Practice
Staff and volunteers are expected to:
-
Stop and reassess if a task feels unsafe.
-
Seek assistance where needed.
-
Use appropriate equipment and support.
-
Follow risk assessment guidance where provided.
Think before you lift.
Lifting Guidance
-
Think before you lift.
-
Adopt a stable position.
-
Bend your knees and get a good hold.
-
Keep the load close to your waist. Don’t flex.
-
Don’t twist or lean.
-
Keep your head up and move smoothly.
